High Spirits of a Sinking City
Updated: Dec 10, 2023
There's just so much to say about CDMX.
The city itself is gigantic, and there's an impossible amount of amazing experiences to be had in almost any amount of time. The lead of my Taco y Mezcal crawl (awesome tour, by the way) mentioned that she had grown up in Mexico City, but there's just so much going on and new spots opening up all the time- it's hard to keep up! If we're talking about art and culture, there are 170 museums as well as 43 galleries to keep you busy. Here, you'll find Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's home in the lovely Coyoacan as well as artwork, murals, etc. During the time while I was there, I was fortunate to see the gorgeous Frida inmersiva exhibit.
I went on a few Airbnb tours during this trip, and every one of them was absolutely worth
it. I decided to do the Frida Bicycle Tour, the Taco y Mezcal Crawl (linked above), and Lucha Libra and Mask Making experience. I mean, how can you go to Mexico City and not go to a Lucha Libre match? I highly recommend every one of these experiences.
I've also got to drop the Netflix series (that you should check out) here, Heavenly Bites: Mexico. I ended up making it to one of the Michelada spots featured on the show called, MicheladasDoble SS Sara y Susy Tepito. I've got to be honest, I was pretty excited to have one of their gomichelas and to see them in person after watching them on the show. It was everything and more than I expected, and the energy at Doble SS just can't be beat.
I spent a couple weeks in Mexico City- which was an absolutely mind blowing two weeks, but I could've easily stayed a month. There's so much history around and just outside the city, you also have some really incredible historical sites, expeditions, caves, volcanoes, hot air balloon experiences, and hot springs. Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that there isn't much that this town doesn't have to offer. There are also plenty of Mezcal Bars sprinkled around the city, and Bosforo (featured on this list) was one of my favorites visited.
I stayed in the historic area of Mexico City, and I thought that was a pretty ideal spot to see the city from. Some things did require a cab ride across town, but it was worth it. While staying in the historic district, I could just wander down the street and see amazing architecture and many of the buildings and monuments that were on my list. Also, don't forget that much of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet was filmed in the city. You've also got the historic and elegant Art Nouveau Gran Hotel which would be a tragedy to miss.
There's absolutely no way I can begin to touch on all the must-sees in CDMX. If you have an opportunity to drop in, I suggest you stay as long as you can and soak up all the spirit of the city.
